Civil War Zouave Memorabilia

Zouaves were originally North African troops who served in the French Army in the 1830s. The Zouaves wore distinctive, colorful uniforms, usually consisting of a fez and turban, baggy pants, a vest, a short jacket, leggings, and a sash. The uniforms were usually brightly colored and adorned with bright trim, braid, and brass buttons.

Even before the Civil War, "Zouave fever" came to America. The Zouaves' colorful uniforms and fancy drill caught the attention of militia units, many of which adopted the Zouave look. American Zouave units were found in both Union and Confederate armies.
